PRESS RELEASE Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) strongly condemns the recent violent attacks against journalists. Last night, three journalists were attacked. Sun Online revealed that their reporter Murushid Abdul Hakeem had received serious head injuries after being hit by a battery thrown by the MDP protesters around 7pm local time. Also Rajje Tv reported that, its cameraman Mohamed Shanoon was attacked by riot police around 2.30am. Raajje TV informed that police had hit his shoulders and neck with batons. Minivan Daily also reported their reporter Ahmed Haisam was attacked by riot police. We call on police to comment on these accusations and should accountable those who are responsible. We have also received reports of political activists using press cards. So we call on media organizations to be cautious when issuing press cards, and not to allow journalists to misuse it. (END) |
